Report on Liberal Biennial Convention
Jan 13-15, 2012
On a very cold and snowy weekend in January in Ottawa Liberals met to decide on policy and select a new executive. More than 3200 people showed up from all across Canada. A third of the delegates were under 30, and Young Liberals were very well represented. Many executive positions were contested, but the contests, while hard fought, were fair and respectable. Mike Crawley emerged as the new President of the party and seemed to symbolize the desire for change and a fresh start.
One big issue that got settled was the process for selecting the next party leader. A new 'Supporter' class of Liberals has been created that will allow all citizens who support Liberal ideals to participate in that vote. This makes the Liberal Party the most open in Canada.
The assembly also voted to support preferential voting in the next general election where voters can indicate their first and second choice thus ensuring that the person elected has a stronger mandate from a greater number of people.
Your riding sent an unprecedented number of delegates and ensured there was a strong rural voice heard in the many meetings held. Your delegates worked very hard. The days were long with no real breaks provided, but we met, debated, learned and networked. Many of our delegates were impressed with the amount of thought being given to rural issues. All of the delegates were impressed with the energy and hope generated.
